PICPA-NMMC STILL
LIVING THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT
While the Olympic flame
has been extinguished in Beijing, culminating
an almost three (3) weeks of world class
sport competition and colossal display
of opening and closing ceremonies, the
Philippine Institute of Certified Public
Accountants – Northern Metro Manila
Chapter (NMMC) continues to burn the flame
of Olympic spirit and fuel the passion.
If the Olympic motto is Citius, Altius,
Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger), the
NMMC’s is Smarter, Stronger and
Happier.
SMARTER
The PICPA-NMMC under
the helmship of Mr. Norlito Antonio, has
organized regular seminars that are relevant,
comprehensive and reasonably priced for
its target participants. As an initial
salvo, the group conducted the very timely
“Seminar on New Wage Order and Latest
Withholding Tax Rulings” on August
02, 2008 and was held in the UE-Kalookan
Campus. The seminar was so well-attended
(218 participants) that the spacious Multi-Purpose
Hall of UE was jam-packed and some walk-in
participants who were not accommodated
were advised to attend a similar seminar
to be scheduled the following month. Topics
on the new wage order and withholding
tax were thoroughly discussed by Atty.
Antonio Ligon and Ms. Janette R. Cruz,
respectively, and were warmly appreciated
by the participants based on their engaging
interaction and participation.
For this month, the NMMC
conducted another seminar on taxation
and SEC related topics. The activity was
held in the Cabalen Restaurant in West
Avenue, QC on September 06, 2008. The
speaker for this gathering was the crowd
favorite and most-sought after taxation
speaker, Ms. Janette Cruz, who eloquently
spoke on “How to Deal with TVN/LOA
from BIR and Latest Withholding Tax Regulations”.
Atty. Ma. Gracia Casals-Diaz was the speaker
on the topic “New SEC Rules”.
With buffet lunch and comprehensive and
timely seminar topics, the activity was
also a hit that both the organizers and
participants left home happy, satisfied
and… SMARTER.
STRONGER
Aside from the undertakings
to improve the mental condition and strength
of its members, the PICPA-NMMC also conducted
various physical activities to help its
members achieve stronger body so that
they can withstand the daily toll and
rigors of the accounting profession and
their personal activities.
The council still has
its weekly badminton practice that has
been going on for more than three (3)
years now. For those who are interested
to join, the NMMC has regular badminton
games every Friday evening at the Battledore
and Shuttlecock Badminton Court in Scout
Ojeda in Quezon City. Everyone is welcome
to join whether you are a Class A or Class
Z player, in your early 20’s or
late 90’s, for as long as you can
still hold a racquet and see the shuttlecock
you are welcome to join. Just a word of
caution, the group also has the penchant
of gobbling up twice as much the calories
they burn in the games. Eating after the
badminton practice is the highlight of
that weekly practice.
The NMMC also joined
the Annual PICPA MMR Annual Sportfest
held last July 20, 2008. The chapter actively
participated in all the sports competitions
(Badminton and Bowling). The chapter even

enjoyable to everyone. The council will
continue to respond to the challenges
of the profession and help its members
become a well-equipped accountants and
well-rounded individuals. We, members
and officers of the council, despite our
modest membership size, are proud of what
we have accomplished during the quarter.
Everyone is eager to continue hitting
the road again for the next quarter. As
they say it in the Olympics, let the games
begin.
