The Accountancy week
started off last July 20, 2008 with a
Holy Mass sponsored by the PICPA National
Office. The Metro Manila Region (MMR)
started with the usual Sportsfest of Badminton
and Bowling among the Chapters and some
guest Chapters. The badminton games were
held at the Metro Badminton Courts in
Pasig City. Meanwhile, the bowling games
were set at the Megamall Bowling Center,
Mandaluyong City.
For the Badminton tournament,
there were several categories. The overall
Champion for the Badminton Tournament
is the Western MMC while for the Bowling,
it was MNTC team from the EMMC. Overall,
WMMC bagged this year’s Champion
for the Sportsfest.
In keeping with the National
Theme “ Vision in ONE”, the
MMR Day commenced with a procession of
the Presidents and representatives of
Board of Accountancy (BOA). Accountancy
Week Committee, PICPA Metro Manila Regional
Council, PICPA National Board 2008-2009,
ACPAE, ACPACI, ACPAPP Presidents, PICPA
Metro Manila Regional Chair and the PICPA
National President 2008-2009 and Keynote
Speaker Sectoral. The first session was
keynoted by the Hon. Francis Joseph Guevarra
Escudero, Senator, Republic of the Philippines.
A Tax Forum followed
with the latest updates from BIR shared
by Atty. Nelson Aspe, Deputy Commissioner
of BIR.
The Outgoing MMR Chair,
Mr. Donato Danao was afforded time to
render his Valedictory Address and award
his Chairman Awards to the Members of
the Council and Committee Chairs during
his term. He cannot miss to mention that
for his term, two Chapters of the region
bagged the much-coveted Hall of Fame Awards
for the Chapter A Categories: the Eastern
Metro Manila Chapter (EMMC) and the Western
Metro Manila Chapter (WMMC). Turnover
ceremonies to the new MMR Chair followed.

Chair, Mr. Marcos T. Lim, in turn, rendered
his Inaugural Speech and started off by
soliciting cooperation and more active
participation from the membership to the
plans and programs for the 2008-2009 fiscal
year.
Mr. Edgar O. Chua, the
Country Chairman of the Pilipinas Shell
Petroleum Corp. shared his thoughts on
the Oil Price Increase.Mr. Wilson Tan,
a Partner of SGV and Co., discussed some
trends/updates for the PFRS/PAS and Interpretations.
For a lighter side, Ms. Cory Quirino,
a Health and Wellness Icon, shared her
personal tips on “Wellness: Key
to Work Life Harmony”. Meanwhile,
Atty. Ma. Gracia Casals-Diaz , OIC, Office
of General Accountant, Securities and
Exchange Commission discussed “Financial
Reporting Regulations by SEC”.
As if it was not a full
day enough, there were still activities
for the night, PICPA goes to Broadway
was held . MMR as well as ACPAE, ACPACI
and ACPAPP, each one presented Broadway
inspired song and dance number, complete
with costumes. MMR presented something
from Phantom of the Opera, ACPAE –
Les Miserables, ACPACI – CATS and
ACPAPP – Singing in the Rain. Best
news of all, MMR garnered the top prize
of P75,000.00. By the way, intermission
was provided by the officers and directors
of the organization by way of a fashion
Show… Truly the CPAs have transformed
into Certified Performing Artists.
The different Chapters
of MMR conducted their own professional
development activities by visiting universities
in their respective geographical areas.
